As we eagerly await WordCamp Nepal 2024, it’s worth reflecting on the humble beginnings of the beloved Wapuu mascot. Born out of creativity and community spirit, Wapuu’s journey traces back to a WordCamp Tokyo after-party in 2009. In this blog post, we’ll explore the history of Wapuu and its evolution into a global symbol of the WordPress community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Birth of Wapuu: <\/strong>Wapuu’s story begins with a simple yet impactful idea presented at the WordCamp Tokyo after-party in 2009. Matt Mullenweg, the co-founder of WordPress, sought ideas from the Japanese WordPress community to promote the platform in Japan. One innovative suggestion stood out\u2014to create a mascot unique to Japan for WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wapuu’s Debut:<\/strong> From this enthusiasm and support, Wapuu made its debut as a cute, Japanese monster\u2014representing the fusion of creativity and community collaboration. The name “Wapuu” itself is a portmanteau, combining “WordPress” and the Japanese word for “elephant” (wappu, \u30ef\u30c3\u30d7), resulting in the adorable character we know today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
